As a Junior software engineer – Mainframe you will learn from scratch about mainframe and Cobol from our experienced colleagues while working on real tasks and contribute to the development of key banking solutions. This includes coding, testing, and debugging software applications. If you’re curious, data-driven, and eager to grow, this is the place for you.

This means hands-on exposure to real AI use cases, modern tooling, and problem-solving challenges on top of the core competency path. Primary tasks and responsibilities include:  

• Learn and navigate the Mainframe environment (TSO, 3270, CICS, datasets, job flows). 

• Work with COBOL code—reading, maintaining, and making small enhancements. 

• Write and debug SQL/DB2 interactions inside COBOL programs. 

• Execute tests using automated testing and contribute to BDD‑style testing workflows. 

• Run, analyze, and troubleshoot batch jobs & CICS transactions. 

• Document systems, flows, and logic clearly and consistently. 

• Support incident management and root cause analysis for program failures. 

• Participate in Scrum and collaborate across teams. 

• Use Git, Jenkins, and other dev tools to support development and testing. 

• Apply performance‑aware coding to minimize CPU/cost impacts. 

To succeed you will have to be:   

• a graduate with bachelor's degree in fields of technology or computer science, planning to continue education with master's degree; a student on master's degree in IT fields or in other fields, who would like to start a career in IT 

• fluent in English (both written and spoken) 

• available at least 32 hours per week (Monday - Friday) 

• a quick learner focused on professional development and improving technical knowledge 

• motivated to join a one-year program and willing to stay with us afterwards 

• willing to learn Cobol & SQL/DB2  

• analytical for debugging and incident handling 

• attentive to details and have basic understanding of testing 

• comfortable working with both old and modern tooling

What does the recruitment process look like?

1. Complete a cognitive test. 

1. First interview with our recruiter (online).  

1. Meet our technical expert onsite to get to know BEC/Nykredit and tell us about your skills. 

1. Participate in the Assessment Day working on group assignment (onsite) - 13th and 14th May  

1. Meet your future manager for a final interview. 

1. Sign your contract and get ready to start on August 3rd, 2026!
